Beginning Tuesday, March 14 through Monday, April 3, guests 18 and over, who fill out a bracket in the restaurant will have the chance to win a prize from their local Rock & Brews restaurant and will also be entered to win a grand prize – a trip for two to Chicago and tickets to attend a premier music festival this summer.

Cardboard: It surrounds us, linking our desires via the packaging of consumer goods, keeping them safe, quenching our thirst for things. It is a material rarely paid any attention…..but some artists grasp the malleability of it, as well as its strength and ability to be transformed.

This exhibit features 13 artists who have found ways to transform the pulped wood to tell new stories. Some replicate realistic objects, some explore structures, and some just delight with their humor and whimsy.

The U.S. DOJ, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) has declared October 7 as National Coffee with a Cop Day. The Coffee with a Cop program was started by our own Hawthorne Police Department in 2011 as a way to help “break down barriers” between police and the community.

The concept is simple, Police officers and community members come together in an informal, neutral space to discuss community issues, build relationships, and drink coffee. Since 2011, Coffee with a Cop has done wonders for community trust and partnership building.

In addition to the intensive study in performance, several field trip options are made available to the camp students. This year will include a visit to the Yamaha Instrument Corporation, as well as to other specialty instrument manufacturers.

In addition, camp students participate in a recording session late in the week at El Segundo’s Sonic Fuel Studios. The week-long intensive closes with a special performance of all the students, and some of the more advanced student musicians perform with the El Segundo Concert Band. It’s that time of year again! Santa and his reindeer are gearing up and getting ready for the holiday season. Once again, the Torrance Police Officers’ Association (TPOA) will escort the Santa Float as it make its rounds throughout the City of Torrance starting Monday, November 28 and running through Monday, December 19.

The Santa Float was started in 1969 and is sponsored by the TPOA. The float will leave the station promptly at 5:00 p.m. except on November 28, December 5 and December 19 when the float will leave at 4:00 p.m.

This Concert/Fundraiser is in association with the Beach Cities Toy Drive. The concert will start at 3 p.m. and end at 8 p.m. with an impressive line-up of live bands including performances by Jeremy Buck and the BANG, Justin Hopkins, Barley, Pink Roach with Joe Cipolla, Max Volume, the Holiday All-Star Band and special guests.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a toy worth at least $5 – $10 in value.

Coffee with a Cop (and Firemen!)

coffee-with-a-copOn Tuesday, December 6, the Torrance Police and Fire Departments will team up for Coffee with a Cop at 85C Bakery Café from 8 to 10 a.m.

The Coffee with a Cop program was started by the Hawthorne Police Department in 2011 as a way to help break down barriers between police and the community. The concept is simple, police officers and community members come together in an informal, neutral space to discuss community issues, build relationships, and drink coffee.

Everyone is welcome to join the Torrance PD and their partners in Public Safety, the Torrance Fire Department for this extra special joint Coffee with a Cop event.

The 2016 Torrance Police & Fire Holiday Toy Drive will also be well underway. If you would like to donate an unwrapped toy, they will be more than happy to accept them at this event.

Major components of the Bocce Courts project include three regulation-size bocce ball courts. The location was formerly used for roller hockey and basketball.

Hermosa Beach Sand Snowman Contest

Just because the South Bay doesn’t experience cold, snowy winters doesn’t mean you have to miss out on traditional winter pastimes. The South Bay may not have snow but there’s sand….lots and lots of sand. So instead of building a snowman, how about building a sand snowman?

It is recommended that you arrive early to claim a prime building site. Registration starts at 8:45 a.m. north of the Hermosa Pier at shoreline and building commences at 9 a.m.

Prizes will be awarded for the Most Unique, Most Traditional, Best Dressed, Hermosa Beach Favorite and Funniest. Judging begins at 11:15 a.m. with awards being presented at 11:30 a.m.

Candy-Cane-LaneThe 1200 block of East Acacia Avenue in El Segundo magically transforms into Candy Cane Lane every holiday season since 1919!

The homes are festooned with lights and decorations beginning the second Saturday of December and Santa’s sleigh stops for a visit on certain nights through December 23. The street will be closed to through traffic through Christmas night, and most houses will still have their lights up through New Year’s weekend. The lights are generally on until about 10.

Manhattan Beach’s signature holiday event gets underway at 4 p.m. with a concert by the Hyperion Outfall Serenaders followed by the award-winning Mira Costa Jazz Ensemble at 5 p.m. and local favorite, Joe’s Band, will be ‘Rockin’ the Holidays’ at 6 p.m. Don’t miss the Manhattan Beach fireworks!

Skechers’ Snow Park will be open from 4 to 6:30 p.m. with five 50′ sled runs, two snow play areas and snowmen available for family photos. A donation of canned goods, cash or a new, unwrapped toy is requested for admission to the Snow Park. The Bounce Park will have two huge slides and the Fire Dog bouncie for smaller children.
