Torrance may be famous for many things including Louie Zamperini and craft breweries, but wine is not one of those things, until now. Owner Greg Harai and Wes Takiguchi (first-time restaurateurs and wine enthusiasts) were eager to bring new life into the downtown historic Torrance community and stumbled upon the perfect location for their restaurant and wine bar.
“We were looking for a place to put a great neighborhood wine bar, offering upscale food pairings with quality driven ingredients,” says Harai of the concept behind the small restaurant located in the heart of Torrance. Formerly The Original Luigi’s Pizzeria, the space for Restoration Kitchen & Wine required major renovations.
“We wanted to open the space and create more room to breathe”, says Takiguchi of the warm design featuring wood paneling, hanging pendant lights, chalkboard art and white marble counters.
Eager to avoid the elitism associated with wine and wine knowledge, Harai and Takiguchi wanted to create at atmosphere with an easy-going vibe and an even easier wine list to understand. Showcasing the unique varietals from the Willamette Valley of the Pacific Northwest and the Central Coast of California, each wine has been hand picked for its ability to pair well with their menu offerings. Creating a location where individuals could restore their body and soul with an unassuming but varied selection of familiar and eclectic dishes and fine selection of wines and locally sourced micro-brews was essential to their vision. The beers on draft will all be local highlighting regional favorites such as Smog City, Absolution, and Strand Brewing Co.
Striving to advance the nuances of pairing different foods with fine wines and beer, Harai and Takiguchi have partnered with Chef Camden Hershberger who gained his culinary chops at the prestigious Bouchon Bistro. A former student of the Art Institute of Los Angeles, Hershberger was the recent Chef de Partie at Thomas Keller’s acclaimed French restaurant in Beverly Hills.
As Executive Chef of Restoration Kitchen and Wine Bar, Chef Hershberger is still working out the final menu but will be plating up dishes like his Braised Pork Belly with buttery udon noodles, blistered shishito peppers, and mustard greens and his perfectly crispy Seared Atlantic Salmon with eggplant puree, cherry tomatoes, anaheim peppers, arugula, and corn. A few dishes give culinary nods to the Japanese heritage of owners Harai and Takiguchi, such as the Furikake Fries with Nori Komi Furikake and Wasabi Mayo and the fresh Ahi Poke with avocado and wasabi.
The restaurant will be open for dinner only at this time.
