For over eight years, South Bay by has kept the community informed of all the incredible leisure activities and special events taking place in our seaside bubble. Due to the COVID-19 crisis, we’re temporarily switching gears to act as a clearing house for hyper-local news.

We’re receiving information from multiple, reliable sources. In order to distribute all of this information in a timely manner, we’re posting several announcements to the Daily Blog page each day.

Help R6 Distillery Make Hand Sanitizer!

There have been numerous requests from fire fighters, police officers, doctors, nurses, and hospitals requesting assistance with the production of hand sanitizer.

R6 Distillery has launched a GoFundMe page to help with an initiative directed toward EMS and first responders in the LA area. In order to do so, R6 needs to spend a significant amount of capital to bring in the raw material to provide such relief.

They are receiving dozens of calls and emails daily, and their top priority remains police, fire, government agencies, and hospitals requesting support for this specific need.

Water & Wood Opening Reception *POSTPONED*

March 28 – April 4, 2020

The Hermosa Beach Artist Collective presents Water & Wood 2020 Opening Reception on Saturday, March 28 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Resin Gallery.

The exhibit showcases the work of South Bay artists in a variety of mediums. This annual exhibit of over 85 artists and photographers, celebrating and creating, expressing and exploring, reimagining and remixing, pigments and pixels through the brush and the lens.

This event is FREE to attend! The exhibition will be on view through April 4.

Bottles & Barrels

Our Lady of Guadalupe will host the Bottles & Barrels fundraiser on Saturday, March 28 from 6 to 10 p.m. at OLD Parish Hall.

Attendees will enjoy a special evening sampling boutique California Wines and local craft beers. Tickets include unlimited wine and beer, gastropub delicacies, live music from local favorite, Jack’s Ukulele, followed by a DJ and dancing. $20 Opportunity Drawing Tickets will also be available at the event for a chance to win a Case of Wine, $250 Gift Card to The Strand House and a $100 Gift Card to Gum Tree. 100% of ticket sales and sponsorship proceeds directly support OLG school and students.

ShockBoxx Virtual Artist Talk & Closing Reception

ShockBoxx will host a Virtual Artist Talk & Closing Reception on Saturday, March 28 from 7 to 9 p.m. via Zoom.

Quarantine Schmorantine… You can’t put the rain back in the sky, and Sarah Svetlana’s show rained down so much goodness the Shockboxx team won’t let it fade away without a proper closing reception and artist talk.

Since the community can’t go to Shockboxx, Shockboxx is going out to the community via Zoom. Find it on your computer, or download the app for your phone or tablet and let’s do this. The meeting code is 479 922 3403.

Discover Sustainable Fashion *POSTPONED*

Generation Blue presents Discover Sustainable Fashion on Sunday, March 29 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Clark Building.

The event is a fundraiser where fun, fashion, and resale meet in a salute to Earth-Friendly style practices. Attendees will enjoy a fabulous fashion show of gently-used styles curated by super-stylist, Lisa Martinez, of Sweeties Vintage. You can purchase upscale, gently-used clothing for kids and women and learn how to help safeguard the planet via the way you buy, recycle, and educate others about sustainability.

Virtual Belly Dance Class

Pull & Thread will host a Virtual Bellydance Class on Wednesday, April 1 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. via Zoom.

This is a full body belly dance inspired workout that provides a complete mind/body/spirit experience, tightening up those curves while exploring an ancient feminine art. Participants leave relaxed, invigorated, and in touch with their body in a new and refreshing way.

Richstone Pier to Pier Walk *POSTPONED*

The annual Richstone Pier to Pier Walk will take place Saturday, April 25 at the Manhattan Beach Pier.

Participants will walk from the Manhattan Beach Pier to the Hermosa Beach Pier and back. Check in begins at 7:30 a.m. with the event getting underway at 8:30 a.m. The Walkathon is uniquely different from other walks as live music will take place along the route as well as food and beverage vendors, fitness trunk shows, photo-booth and more. The Pet Parade begins at 7:45 a.m. The Opening Ceremony and Awards for Top Fundraising Teams, Individuals/Pets and Best Dressed Pet is at 8 a.m. This is a family friendly event and children of all ages are welcome.

All proceeds benefit the Richstone Family Center child abuse treatment and prevention programs. This is a very popular event and everybody will be there! Don’t miss this opportunity to take a few steps to help prevent child abuse.

BeachLife Speakeasy Live Stream Event

BeachLife Festival presents Speakeasy Live Stream Event on Friday, May 1 from 3 to 8 p.m.

The crew at BeachLife has decided that, in the true spirit of live music, the show must go on! So they’re bringing us the SpeakEasy line-up via a free Live Stream Event on May 1st, the original BeachLife Festival date. The event features performances by Chris Shiflett of Foo Fighters, Jim Lindberg of Pennywise, Trever Keith of Face to Face, Jason Cruz of Strung Out, Jason Devore of Authority Zero, LAW, and more.

More details will follow in the coming weeks, but we do know that during the event they’ll be raising awareness and donations for music industry relief and several other worthy causes helping those in need. So Tune in, jam out, and do some good at the same time!

South Bay Stories Show

October 3 & 4, 2020

The South Bay Stories Show presents two performances on Saturday, October 3 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, October 4 at 2:30 p.m. at the Second Story Theater in Hermosa Beach.

The event features stories with life themes: growing up, living through life’s changes, romance/love has many forms and many faces, and exploring new people, places and ideas. In “Can’t Wait…”, Steve Goldstein recounts his amazing life and the search for Jolly John. In “The Answer is Beneath Our Feet”, well-known South Bay horticulturist Mike Garcia tells how he came to be in So Cal and offers his perspective on personal action to help reverse climate change. In “Selfish or Selfless?”, Catherine Graham relates fulfillment and sacrifice while foster parenting. Three other storytellers and South Bay’s favorite local stand-up comic, Chuck McPeak, will make you laugh, touch and inspire you. No evening of storytelling is complete without music. Composer and accordionist Stanley Oropesa will perform a musical story and musical interludes

Rock Your Pink

The Standing Room presents the Rock Your Pink Cancer Benefit Concert on Saturday, October 17 from 4 to 10:30 p.m.

Headlining will be the rock group Crow Hill Band, a South Bay favorite that has been electrifying the LA area with their rock tributes covering several decades of music. This unique band is made up of executives from across the aerospace, medical, retail and marketing industries. The lead singer, Laryssa Densmore, a rocket engineer, is a breast cancer survivor. Deborah Bakke, the owner of The Standing Room, is also a breast cancer survivor – making this the perfect match for hosting this event to help raise awareness for our South Bay family. Special guests include Charis Rey, Steve Smythe, Behind Schedule and Brent George!
