SALPS Virtual Symposium

October 29, 2020

The Roundhouse Aquarium presents the first SALPS Virtual Symposium on Thursday, October 29 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. via Zoom.

In November 2019, Oceanographic Teaching Stations, Inc. launched the Roundhouse Aquarium’s Science-Adapted Leadership Program for Students (SALPS), a program that engages students in real life application of the scientific method and fosters their ability to teach and connect the community to citizen science and the oceans.

SALPS also cultivates a long-lasting curiosity for the natural world and increases science literacy in our communities, while providing students opportunities to expand skills in leadership, public speaking and teamwork through mentorship and community service.

Since the program was launched in the fall of 2019, sixteen middle school and high school students have participated in hands-on research and citizen science, while volunteering at the Roundhouse to educate the public. They had 6 different cohorts that studied bottlenose dolphins and sand crabs in Manhattan Beach. The program had temporarily suspended data collection between March and July but students recently completed their research.

During the student symposium, four student groups will be presenting their findings.

All are welcome to register and watch!

Please RSVP to [email protected]. and the zoom link will be provided.
