DiscOasis Recap

July 18, 2021

I attended the second night of DiscOasis at South Coast Botanic Garden Saturday night.

This new experience runs through September 6 and is the brainchild of music producer Niles Rogers. He’s been an avid roller skater most of his life and has found a way to share his passion on a large scale.

Even if you’re don’t skate, it’s a thoroughly enjoyable way to spend a summer evening. First off, SCBG is one of the jewels of the South Bay, and being surrounded by the beauty of nature is always invigorating.

As you make your way toward the roller rink, you’ll come upon a number of vignettes set to some of the greatest pop and disco songs ever recorded. These encounters set the tone for the evening and will have you boogying, bopping and shimmying your way along the path.

Once you arrive at the roller rink, the entertainment factor is off the charts! The large scale production is impressive and the whole scene is such a juxtaposition, it feels otherworldly….. a roller rink that landed in the middle of a forest.

A DJ spins tunes from a massive perch overlooking the roller rink, the design paying homage to all things disco with lots of glitter, lame, flashing lights, disco balls and dancers.

Costumed professional skaters weave their way among ticketed attendees and every hour the rink is cleared for a short performance. They’re so graceful, it’s a joy to sit back and watch the show. It’s just as much fun to watch all the regular skaters, regardless of their skill level, because they’re all smiling and having a great time. Even when they fall, they’re laughing!

DiscOasis is super unique experience and a fun night out for the whole family…. and the music will have you dancing all the way home!

Skate rental is included in the ticket price, along with helmets and skating “aids” for those that need a little stability (it resembles a walker, but with wheels).

DiscOasis takes place from 5 to 10 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. Tickets start at $39. Parking is $10. Food, beverages and merchandise are available for sale.
