Vietnam Veterans of America South Bay Chapter 53 is proud to announce the Annual Scholarship Program for graduating high school students.

Since 1995 the VVA South Bay Chapter 53 has been awarding scholarships to graduating seniors from local South Bay area high schools. In addition to encouraging and supporting continued education, they are trying to heighten awareness of the Vietnam War, the men and women who served during that period, and the huge impact it has made on the United States, both then and now.

This year, Chapter 53 will again award scholarships of $1,000 to selected college or technical school bound South Bay area high school seniors.

Applicants must submit an essay on a Vietnam Era Veteran, defined as any Veteran who served in the U.S. Armed Forces on active duty, for other than training purposes, either 1) in the Republic of Vietnam between February 28, 1961 and May 7, 1975 or 2) in any duty location between August 5, 1964 and May 7, 1975.

      Tam is pleased to announce two new exhibitions for fall: Baker\u2019s Dozen 2020<\/em> in the Main Gallery and Rewilding Structures<\/em> in Gallery Two. <\/p>\n

      Main Gallery<\/strong> – Baker\u2019s Dozen 2020<\/em> acts as a review of sorts; a survey show of thirteen artists whose work made an impression upon the curators in the last year. These thirteen reflect current directions in Southern Californian contemporary art practices. <\/p>\n

      Historically, a Baker\u2019s Dozen is thirteen instead of twelve, as British bakers in the 13th century gave customers an extra loaf of bread to avoid being punished by King Henry III for cheating the public when serving up notoriously light loaves. It takes on new meaning during 2020, considering all the necessary pandemic closures that robbed public of experiences. As with previous Baker\u2019s Dozens, the selections within this exhibition reflect our own preconceptions and biases, centering on artistic endeavors at this moment in history. 2020 has proven to be a year of daunting challenges, and it is insightful to discover how new creations can either follow, oppose and\/or move beyond the influences of our particular times. <\/p>\n

                          <\/a>The Fresh Air Crew presents a virtual private screening of The Next Step: A Story of Tragedy, Triumph, and a Wild Ride on Route 66<\/strong> on Friday, March 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. PST.<\/p>\n

                          From March 10, 2019 to May 15, 2019, Janne Kouri, Founder of NextStep, rode his power wheelchair from Manhattan Beach, CA to Washington, D.C. to raise awareness and funds to support the 6 million individuals and wounded service members living with paralysis in the U.S.<\/p>\n

                          Janne was joined by other participants who rode bikes alongside him across the country. This dedicated team inspired those at the rehabilitation centers, universities, and the communities they visited. They provided quality-of-life grants, donated medical equipment, and hosted charity events.<\/p>\n

                          The adventure tested the team\u2019s spirit from beginning to end. The LA to DC journey was a true test of endurance, strength and camaraderie but, the team had a lot of fun along the way. The team experienced this amazing country from such a unique perspective and they met so many amazing people along the way. It was the adventure of a lifetime! <\/p>\n
