About eleven years ago, I had the idea to create a one-stop-shop detailing the many amazing events taking place throughout the South Bay. At that time, there were dozens (possibly hundreds) of websites, blogs and publications concerning things to do in the South Bay, but most were either city specific or cast a much wider net to include cities beyond our bubble, like Marina del Rey, Long Beach, Culver City, etc. That’s how South Bay by Jackie.com came to be. While I take credit for the concept, it would never have materialized without the help and expertise of a few key players, namely Dave Austin, Gloria Plascencia, Jeri Wilson and Steve Snively; and the support and encouragement of my husband John, my fab family and extraordinary friends. I believe I’ve provided a useful and convenient service for the website users and Weekend Guide subscribers, and I hope my audience benefitted from it, as much as I enjoyed gathering the information and distributing it. You know I’ve always been about sharing the good stuff! The website opened up so many doors and afforded me the chance to become better acquainted with most of the individuals and organizations that make the South Bay such a special place, and I’ll be forever grateful for that opportunity. So here we are…. the final edition of the South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide. It’s been a pleasure and a privilege to play a small role in our extended community for the last 10+ years. The South Coast Botanic Garden presents SOAR: Monarch Migration opening on Friday, October 1 and running through November 30. Monarchs are one of only a few butterfly species that migrate. At this brand-new exhibit, visitors are invited to come learn why, how and where they travel. The immersive pavilion, which will be replanted inside, will showcase not only Monarchs, but also a few mimics (other butterflies that may look like a Monarch but aren’t actually). SOAR guides (both our in-person guides and our educational materials) can help you become a butterfly detective so you can tell the difference between the species in the pavilion. Plus, the host and nectar garden outside the pavilion will be replanted with everything our Western Monarchs love, including milkweed, which helps repopulate this very special butterfly. Monarchs have a very important story to tell. While they may be the most well-known butterfly, their population is on a steep decline. The exhibit will also touch on what YOU can do to help. “While we want to bring exciting and fun experiences to our Members and community, it’s even better when those experiences also provide education,” says Adrienne Nakashima, the Garden’s CEO. “The Monarch butterfly is a beloved member of our Garden, flying freely throughout our 87 acres. The annual Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair takes place Saturday, October 2 and Sunday, October 3 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. A longstanding South Bay tradition, the Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair is a fun-filled, family occasion featuring live music, entertainment, arts and crafts, games and rides. The Hometown Fair merchants offer an extensive assortment of quality craftsmanship. Exhibitors are by invitation only so as to provide a unique selection of items. With over 200 vendors, there’s something for everyone: from ceramics and clothing, oil and water paintings to photographs and sculptures made from glass, wood and metal. There will be a wide variety of edibles available for your dining pleasure and booths are staffed by non-profit organizations. The Beer Garden, which is located on Dorsey Field at the north end of the fairgrounds, opens at 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday and serves beer tickets until 5 p.m. with last call at 5:30 and the doors closing at 6:00. The Beer Garden is staffed by local charities established for the benefit of Manhattan Beach youth. A drawing takes place in June, where four of the charities are selected to operate the Beer Garden. Each group selected will receive a portion of the net proceeds. The Wine Garden, which is located at the basketball courts and can be reached via Live Oak Field, is open from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday with last call at 5:30. The Wine Garden serves premium wines in a casual and comfortable garden-like setting and features live entertainment from 1 to 5 p.m. each day. There will be three stages this year – Main Stage, South Stage and Joslyn Amateur Stage. The Main Stage is located on Dorsey Field near the Beer Garden and will feature the Annual Battle of the Bands on Saturday. Local amateur bands audition in early September and the finalists will battle for the title and a $500 cash prize. The Main Stage will feature entertainment throughout the weekend. There are a number of attractions that return every year due to popular demand, such as the pony rides, the petting zoo and the giant 50-foot slide. The Hometown fair is located in the general area of Live Oak, Dorsey Field and the Joslyn Center in Manhattan Beach. Shuttle service is available from 8 a.m. through 6:30 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday from the Northrop/Grumman parking lot. The shuttle service parking is located at the corner of Aviation Boulevard and Marine Avenue in Redondo Beach and will run approximately every 15 minutes throughout each day. Style on the Spot presents The Village Market on Saturday, October 2 from noon to 4 p.m. Enjoy some fresh air, music and unique vendors in the new Plaza at the Manhattan Village shopping center. The Village Market will run from February to December with live music performances and unique, local vendors spaced out in the Village’s outdoor plaza. Guests are asked to RSVP in order to stagger check-in times so the experience can be the safest for everyone coming to enjoy their Saturday afternoon. Along with an outdoor venue and staggered arrivals, safety is ensured by mask requirements, social distancing reminders, and designated eating/drinking areas. The first 100 guests to register will receive a FREE Village Market jute bag, perfect for carrying their market purchases. There will be only 100 tickets that include a gift bag. These are allocated to one per person RSVP with a ticket, and one per email address that has been submitted. Future Dates: November 6, December 4. Once you’ve parked in the South Parking Garage either go to the event entrance in front of Tommy Bahama and Mercado, or walk toward CPK and you will be able to check-in prior to going into the Plaza. The City of Gardena is proud to announce the 11th annual Gardena Food, Wine & Brew Festival on Saturday, October 2 from noon to 7 p.m. on the lawn of Gardena City Hall. A ticket to the festival will assist in raising funds for the Gardena Senior Citizens Bureau and the Senior Day Care Center and Alzheimer’s Clinic. All attendees will receive a Wine Festival Ticket as well as a wine glass to keep. Come and enjoy the sounds of musical guests DW3 and other local bands. During the festival you can visit food, wine, beer and retail vendors throughout the day. There will also be a Cigar Lounge for cigar enthusiasts that will be open for all to enjoy. World of Sound Productions (WOSP) presents the Hermosa Harmony Festival, the first-ever silent beach festival where attendees will enjoy an immersive experience of live music, DJs, and wellness experiences through high-fidelity headphones. The unprecedented, all ages, unique concert event kicks off on Saturday, October 2 from 2 to 9 p.m. near the Hermosa Beach Pier. With five stages to choose from – including DJs, live performers, dancing, and wellness experiences – each concert goer will receive unique headphones with five channels, allowing them to dial in to the experience of their choice. The crystal-clear audio has a range of nearly a quarter mile in each direction, allowing visitors to even to be able to dance with their toes in the ocean. Performers include Cubensis (Grateful Dead tribute band), Acoustic Graffiti (Led Zeppelin tribute band), Kat Hall, Barley, and Latchkey Kid. There will be 15+ DJs, including participation from Neon Beach LA, Ecstatic Dance LA, and Better Together Records. Wellness experiences include Shine Kids Dance, Yoga, meditation, breath work, and shamanic fitness. Non-alcoholic food and drink will be provided. “There is an insatiable thirst right now for safe outdoor experiences that are memorable and connected on a social level,” said Greg Montemurro, WOSP Director of Digital Media/Marketing. “That’s exactly what we offer.” “Hermosa has long been a destination for great live music and the Hermosa Harmony Festival is an opportunity to continue that tradition. He became captivated with the concept of a silent music experience while skiing in Mammoth with his son. “I came down from the mountain and saw all these people with glowing headphones,” he said. “I’d never experienced a silent disco before and they were playing Neil Diamond’s ’Sweet Caroline’ and all these strangers were bonding and singing together. What struck me was it was a surprisingly communal experience even though everyone had headphones on. My first thought was, “Could I do this with live music?” It took a team with incredible and diverse talents, but the answer was a definitive yes, and the company has blossomed more with every event. “Because we don’t have amplifiers that require a lot of power, we solar power everything,” said Malovani. “We can do this anywhere – on a beach, on top of a mountain, in the desert. We don’t need a power source, we don’t need WiFi. It’s gentle and mindful and just a wonderful experience.” Said Adam Malovani: “Two of my favorite things in life are music and the beach, and if you can put them together, it doesn’t get much better than that.” All ages are welcome! As I was checking the link for this event, I discovered it was postponed until May 1, 2022. The Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy in partnership with Terranea Resort present the annual Palos Verdes Pastoral: A Garden-to-Table Dining Experience on Sunday, October 3 at 5 p.m. on the Catalina Terrace at Terranea Resort. Imagine 200 dinner guests seated at long tables in an exclusive coastal setting… linen tablecloths with exquisite natural décor and wine glasses sparkling in the sunlight… the sounds of the ocean, and a gentle breeze inspiring the feeling of standing in a field of coastal grasslands. Volunteers are needed for Rocktoberfest taking place at Seaside Lagoon from Friday, October 15 through Sunday, October 17. It’s going to be three days of live music from your favorite tribute bands along with great food and beverages. Tickets are $25 to $30 and as a volunteer you would attend for free! There are five shifts available, and three to four volunteers are needed to cover each shift. This way, everyone will have a chance to wander around the festival during their shift and enjoy themselves.
• Friday Shift: 5pm to 9pm
• Saturday Shift: 11am to 3pm or Saturday 4pm to 9pm
• Sunday Shift: 11am to 3pm or Sunday 4pm to 8pm
The festival has donated a space for the American Cancer Society with a canopy and table set-up.
