South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide

September 16, 2021

I’m just gob smacked by the volume of kind words I’ve received since announcing the shutdown of the website. Everyone has expressed sadness over losing the service I’ve provided for 10+ years, but are genuinely happy, excited and supportive of my opportunity to travel the length and breadth of these United States and Canada….. and who knows, maybe even Central and South America! The door, or I should say, the road, is wide open and calling us. I plan to write about our travels, probably in blog format, and will place a banner on the website with that information should you wish to subscribe. The final Weekend Guide will be published on Thursday, September 30 and the website will cease to be maintained at midnight the same day, though it will still be available to view until the hosting subscription expires early in February since there are dozens of events already posted to the website through the end of the year.

Circus Caballero will be at Del Amo Fashion Center through Monday, September 20. Three generations, more than 65 years of circus family, manifest themselves in each of these shows. Beautiful acrobats will delight the public of all ages, with acts of juggling and fine physical and mental coordination and where the triple and double somersaults will keep the audience tied to their seats. The action continues with The Globe of Death, where three brave motorcyclists travel over 70 miles per hour in an act that will have your nerves on edge. Tickets are $10/$25/$30/$40/$50. Children’s coupon is available.

Torrance Art Museum (TAM) presents the Opening Reception of the Fall Exhibitions on Saturday, September 18 from 6 to 9 p.m. featuring the return of the boundary crossing SUR:Biennial, a curiously clever fiber art show, and videos from around the world. The 6th SUR:biennial at the Torrance Art Museum assembles a lineup of artists whose works intersect the spaces between contemplative contemporary perspectives and representing and investigating pluralistic cultural heritages hailing from Mexico, Central America, and South America while living in Southern California, Oregon, and New York. These artists fuse artistic traditions from these cultures with current artistic perspectives to establish and celebrate, while also critiquing, notions of specific Latinx, Latin American, Xicana/o (Chicana/o) cultural identities and redefining identities within these designations. Is it possible to analyze one’s own identity? Is it possible to stand to one side and do the same for one’s encompassing cultures? These are questions essential to the SUR project. No answers are necessarily found here but the need to clarify the right questions to ask is fundamental. The exhibition is co-curated by Ismael de Anda III and Max Presneill. Featured artists: Eddie Rodolfo Aparicio, Marisa Caichiolo, Pete Hoffecker Mejia, Frankie Orozco, The Perez Bros., Carolina Sardi, Jimena Sarno. TAM Gallery Two hosts Social Fabric, an exhibition of socially engaged fiber art which investigates the framework and constructs of contemporary society through the softened lens of fabric, plush and yarn. Taking an often tongue-in-cheek approach, the works exhibited challenge the ideas of “women’s work” and the new norms of our social media society. Curated by Sue-Na Gay. Featured artists: Natalie Baxter, Mimi O. Chun, Kayla Mattes, Threadwinners (Alyssa Arney & Liz Flynn), Nathan Vincent, Megan Whitmarsh. TAM Dark Room hosts VideoWords, video art that uses 15 pairs of words as thematic prompts for their creation. Thirty international artists were called upon by curator Magmart to interpret those words – what they represent – in order to weave a rousing dialogue with the public. Fall Exhibitions are on view Saturday, September 18 through Saturday, December 4, 2021. The Opening Reception is on Saturday, September 18 from 6 to 9 p.m. As always TAM is free and accessible to the public. Masks are mandatory. No reservations required. All programs, schedules, and locations are subject to change. For the latest information and other museum programming, please visit TorranceArtMuseum.com. For additional information, visit the website at http://www.torranceartmuseum.com/ or call 310-618-3846. The Torrance Art Museum is located at 3320 Civic Center Drive in Torrance.
