Special Events

Nature & Me Storytime at George F Canyon Nature Preserve, Friday, March 1st, 9:30am. PVLD librarian Marisa Perley shares books that open children’s eyes to the natural world. Ages 2-5. Email: mperley@pvld.org.

Cactus Wren Monitoring Training at Alta Vicente Reserve, Saturday March 2nd, 9:30am – 11am. Monitor this charismatic and rare species for this annual program to locate cactus wren breeding territories and acres of habitat use. Monitoring begins in March and lasts through August. Guided Nature Walk at Portuguese Bend Reserve by Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy, Saturday, March 9th, 9am. Hike Fire Station trail to Eagle’s Nest. Enjoy ocean views while walking through recently restored wildlife habitat. Strenuous. RPV. Directions and parking: Park in the lot adjacent to the soccer/baseball field at Rancho del Mar High School, 38 Crest Rd., RPV. Education Workshop: “Military History of White Point Nature Preserve”, Saturday, March 23rd, 11am. White Point has a long history as an important national defense site. Join Docent John Horne to hear about the Battle of Los Angeles and see bunkers that once housed two enormous naval guns and the 20-year Nike missile era. FREE. Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy Outdoor Volunteer Day at Alta Vicente Reserve, Saturday, March 2nd, 9th, 23rd and 30th, 9am – 12pm. Have fun and help restore this unique canyon habitat home to many threatened and endangered wildlife species. Sign up at pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Family Nature Walk by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy at George F Canyon Preserve, March 2nd, 11am. Families will enjoy this easy and educational walk with our Naturalist through this beautiful canyon preserve to discover the unique variety of birds, mammals, reptiles and insects that call it home. The walk concludes inside the Nature Center with a hands on exploration of our exhibits. Free and appropriate for all ages. Stroller friendly. Leashed dogs welcome. Bring your family to experience a hands-on-science exploration of the Peninsula’s Raccoon. Then listen as our wonderful librarian, Carla Sedlacek shares related children’s literature. Plant now for butterfly flight season in Spring! Native Plant Sale at the White Point Nature Preserve, March 9th, 11 am to 3 pm – Attract butterflies and other pollinators and beautify your garden with plants grown in the Conservancy’s nursery. Purchase colorful, drought tolerant native plants that make fertilizers and insecticides virtually unnecessary and require little or no water. Naturalists are on hand to give advice. Family Nature Walk with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy at the White Point Nature Preserve, March 16th, 11 am. Everyone in the family will enjoy a Naturalist guided walk through our Tongva Demonstration Garden where you’ll learn how early inhabitants used native plants for survival. Then walk through beautifully restored coastal sage scrub habitat with views of Catalina. For those interested in the military history of the area, continue to walk up to a WWII gun emplacement. Family Outdoor Volunteer Activity at George F Canyon Nature Preserve, March 16th, 11 am. Go green for St. Patrick’s Day! Put on your grubbies and take part in kid-friendly activities to plant seeds, care for native plants and track butterflies.
