June 16, 2013: Day Tripping in El Segundo

P1010046 - sbbjEl Segundo is a great little city with a whole lot of small town charm. The weather was gorgeous yesterday and perfect for strolling around, checking out the shops and restaurants. Our first stop was Electric Bikes LA. Joe and I had interviewed the proprietors, Andrea and Eric Busch, on The South Bay Show a few days earlier and after hearing about these bikes, decided I had to take a test drive. Andrea was fabulous – she showed us the various models and explained how they worked. Then we went off for a spin. We pedaled through town and rode to the beach via Grand Avenue where we put them to the test. Holy Cow! We FLEW up the Grand Avenue hill! I was barely pedaling and was going 25 miles an hour! No sweat, no burn! I was laughing and screaming the entire time and probably looked like a mad woman. An electric bike just went to the top of my wish list! Afterward, we went across the street and were invited into a space being temporarily used to prep for a one-night only installation at the El Segundo Museum of Art. We watched as artist Trina Merry painted and air-brushed live models for the exhibit Objectified. It was a rare treat to watch her in action and see the creative process first-hand. We decided we had to see the exhibit which would open in less than two hours, so we went for a very late lunch, enjoyed a cocktail or two and were back by 5:15. What an incredibly original installation – I’m thrilled we stumbled upon it! The exhibit will run for another week sans the live models. We then stopped in the El Segundo Brewing taproom and ran into the guy behind LA Craft Beer Tours, Dale Caughey. He recently re-started his beer tour of South Bay breweries and taprooms and promised to send me the schedule info. It was a lovely day, full of surprises. If you haven’t been to El Segundo lately, make a point to visit soon! Photos and video are posted on the SBBJ Facebook page here.
