The Hermosa Beach Murals Project will host the Mural #10 Unveiling & Fundraiser on Monday, June 28 at 6 p.m. at at the location of the former Bijou Theater.
The grandest and final mural will celebrate the Hermosa’s Surf & Sand Club a.k.a. the Biltmore Hotel. Artist John Pugh, who has decades of experience with public art and has completed over 250 murals, has been working for several months on the mural that will cover the entire west-facing wall of the building lastly known as the Bijou Theater. The mural measures 3,900 square feet (94.6’ wide by 45’ tall) and is painted in the Trompe l’oeil style. Trompe l’oeil, French for “deceive the eye,” is a style of still life painting that creates the illusion the subject of the painting is three dimensional, with a photographic-like quality.
John’s work has appeared in articles / media worldwide including Time, L.A. Times, New York Times, USA Today, London Sun and Mail, Tokyo Mainichi, BBC World News, and Artweek. John is also the Artist behind Hermosa’s Mural #3, which celebrates West Coast Jazz and became an international tourist Instagram destination after the movie La La Land was released in 2016.
Seating for the Mural #10 unveiling event will be available beginning at 5:30 pm behind the old Bijoux Theater at 42 13th Street. Local Hermosa Beach Musician Jack Tracy will provide live entertainment. The ceremony will last about 30 minutes ending with a live auction, allowing the public to bid on one of the signed & numbered Mural #10 giclée’s. Afterwards, guests who purchased tickets to a reception will be directed to Tower 12 for dinner.
All proceeds from the ticketed portion of the event will fund the final mural costs and allow the Hermosa Beach Murals Project to pass some monies to the Hermosa Beach Historical Society. The HB Historical Society has been entrusted to continue the legacy and maintenance of the 10 Murals that allowed the non-profit organization to share Hermosa’s rich and eclectic culture with the South Bay community and visitors through Public Art.
The mission of the Hermosa Murals Project was always to dedicate 10 murals in 10 years to Hermosa Beach’s downtown area. The non-profit organization raises money through the sale of giclée’s, donations, and memberships to pay for the artist, the prep work and installation of the murals.
Tickets for the Reception are $75.
