Dine Time – Manhattan Beach

Fishing with Dynamite

1148 Manhattan Avenue
Manhattan Beach CA 90266
Cuisine: Seafood
Jackie says: There are a few things about FWD that remind me of the ‘fish shacks’ you find in harbor towns up and down the East Coast: the tiny room, convivial atmosphere and seafood fresh off the boat. But that’s where the similarities end. The cheery, light-filled space buzzes with energy – people are here to eat and eat well. It’s all about the food and Michelin star Chef David LeFevre showcases it brilliantly. The menu has all the old school favorites done exceedingly well – crab cakes, New England clam chowder and battered cod; and an oyster bar already named ‘Best Oyster Bar’ by Los Angeles Magazine. Chef LeFevre takes it to the next level with his ‘new school’ dishes: grilled octopus, grilled sword squid and a mind-blowing Mediterranean sea bass. As if that wasn’t enough, the regular menu is further enhanced by the daily specials! FWD is always packed so you definitely want to make a reservation. Here’s another suggestion; don’t be in a rush to order. Before you look at the menu, look at the dishes as they come out of the kitchen. They’re all so gorgeous, it’s like a fashion show!

(310) 574-2277
Cuisine: Italian Inspired
Jackie says: Manhattan House takes great pride in their farm-to-table philosophy, serving the freshest, seasonal food, much of which is grown locally. While there are many classic Italian dishes done exceedingly well, several offer a delicious twist on the traditional. (The Squid Ink Farfalle features Dungeness crab, breadcrumbs, tomato and pistachio!) The craft cocktail list is impressively classy and the rotating taps offer a wide ranging variety of brews. I should also mention that Thrillist named Manhattan House ‘Best Happy Hour in the South Bay’. ‘Nuf said!

451 Manhattan Beach Boulevard (Metlox Plaza)
Manhattan Beach, CA 90266
Cuisine: American
Jackie says: Nick’s recently moved into the space previously occupied by Chez Soi and Sashi. It’s a great location in Metlox Plaza overlooking the fountain and courtyard. The huge space includes a bar/lounge, dining room and outdoor patio. I’ve only eaten lunch there twice but the dishes were perfection. The menu was well-rounded and I had trouble choosing what to order – it all looked good. I can’t wait to try their Weekend Brunch!

Surf Food Stand

Manhattan Beach, CA

Cuisine: A little bit of everything including breakfast, burgers, Mexican, Mediterranean, smoothies, lattes, and more
Jackie says: This food shack is located on the sand next to the bike path. Order at the counter, grab a table and wait for them to call your number. It’s so casual you might assume it’s a greasy spoon but the food is fresh and very, very good. A must-stop during a Strand cruise any time of day. My favorite? The Breakfast Burrito (with bacon and avocado). They serve it all day and it’s so huge, my husband and I split it and still have a hard time finishing it. Deliciousness!!!

The Kettle

The Rockefeller

1209 Highland Avenue

Jackie says: The Rockefeller originally opened in Hermosa Beach and quickly thereafter established locations in Manhattan and Redondo. All three have become local’s favorites for a number of reasons – the laid back vibe, friendly service, casual-yet-stylish decor and fantastic food. The menu reflects the various influences on California cuisine with several Asian and Mexican dishes, in addition to the famous burgers and health conscience salads…. and yet, it all manages to feel like comfort food. If you don’t have time to sit and savor your morning coffee, they also offer grab-and-go menu items for breakfast that are very, very good. Of course, we would be remiss is we didn’t mention the aforementioned famous .99 cent Tuesday burger special!

The Strand House

Jackie says: Mike Zislis has taken a unique location and created an exceptional setting for fine dining with a casual, beach chic atmosphere. The restaurant is gorgeous and the food is delicious! This place is always packed so reservations are strongly recommended. A Sunday afternoon brunch is just the thing!

Tin Roof Bistro

3500 North Sepulveda Boulevard

Jackie says: Tin Roof Bistro has been a dining destination since the day they opened. Casual and classy, they offer an inspired, creative menu, extensive wine list and serious hand-crafted cocktails. There are several seating options: the patio, a courtyard and intimate corners indoors, in addition to bar seating. My favorite? Pulling up a chair at the bar and grazing on some of the most original, tasty appetizers you’ll find anywhere. It’s a neighborhood place and comfortable enough to sit at the bar by yourself and strike up a conversation with friendly locals.

They change up the menus every now and then but keep the most popular dishes. There’s a little bit of everything at Zinc and it’s all delicious. Enjoy breakfast, lunch or order several small plates and graze. The specialty cocktails are phenomenal!
