January 26, 2017
On September 11, 1917, Torrance High School opened its doors. Over the decades, countless Tartars have walked the iconic halls of Torrance High. One, in particular, would also be celebrating his 100 birthday this year – Louis Zamperini (Class of 1935).
To kick-off the Centennial Celebration of Torrance High, 350 students from the track team and fellow athletes, Student Council, Kiwanis and other clubs will gather on the steps near the office, with the Senior Patio in the backdrop, to spell out “LZ 100” on what would have been Louis Zamperini’s 100 birthday, January 26, 2017. Louis’ son & daughter, Luke & Cynthia, will also partake in this tribute.
The student groups participating, represent some of those to which Louis belonged. Back in his day as a Tartar, Louis was on the track team, and served as the Commissioner of Athletics while on the Student Council. This event will take place at 12:45 p.m. and an aerial photo will be taken of the students. The Torrance High Band will play a birthday tribute to Louis, and the bells from the local church will ring 10 times, representing each decade of the High School and Louis, and in remembrance of the forgiveness he found through conversion. This is a private event for the students only.
The Museum will continue the festivities by extending the Museum hours until 8 p.m. for the general public.
-Watch the City’s Centennial DVD of Lois Zamperini – Triumph of the Torrance Tornado, and the clip of when Louis won the 1934 Southern California Track & Field Championship. (The DVD will be playing from 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM – it’s approx. 15 minutes long)
-Munch a mini cupcake (what’s a party without cupcakes?)
-Listen to Louis’ favorite music from the 40s (4:00 PM – 8:00 PM)
-View Louis’ never-before-seen-in-public Army Air Corp bomber jacket on display (along with a photo of him wearing it, next to the jacket)
This is a FREE event, open to the public, rain or shine.
In addition, all this week, the Red Car Brewery & Restaurant will be offering an Italian favorite on the Weekly Special Menu.
Red Car Brewery & Restaurant is located at 1266 Sartori Avenue in Old Torrance.
